In the opening minutes of *Avowed*'s main quest, the Envoy becomes the victim of a tragic assassination. After unraveling the mystery of their own murder with the help of Kai and Marius in Paradis, you'll uncover the identity of your assassin: Ygwulf. A member of the Paradisan Rebels, who fiercely oppose Aedyr's presence in the region, Ygwulf targeted you as the Emperor's Envoy. Your journey will lead you to track him down to an underground hideout, where you'll need to navigate through numerous enemies and challenging platforming sections. Make sure to stock up on Health Potions and equip the best gear available to you.
As you explore this dungeon, you might come across documents that shed light on Ygwulf's true intentions and his growing remorse. Initially driven by a misguided belief that the Gods commanded him to kill the Envoy, Ygwulf's perspective shifts, and he expresses regret for his actions. Even if you miss these documents, he'll convey his remorse directly when you confront him at the end of the quest. Ygwulf is apologetic yet ready to face justice for what he has done.
What Happens If You Spare Ygwulf or He Turns Himself In?
Choosing to have Ygwulf turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote is the least favorable option. If you direct him to surrender, he'll face the brutal wrath of Inquisitor Lödwyn, leading to a painful death. However, this choice won't yield as rewarding outcomes as the other options. By sparing Ygwulf, he will offer you 625 Copper Skeyt and a small amount of Adra as a token of his gratitude. While these resources won't change your life, they can still be useful. Unfortunately, even if you spare him, Ygwulf's fate is sealed, and he will meet his end later in the story.
Why You Should Kill Ygwulf in Avowed
Given that Ygwulf's destiny inevitably leads to his demise, opting to attack him during your dialogue is the most beneficial choice. This decision triggers a boss fight, providing valuable practice for future encounters in *Avowed*. Moreover, defeating Ygwulf grants you the best loot among the available options. Upon his defeat, you can loot his body for currency, Adra, and his unique armor set, Blackwing. Not only does the Blackwing armor boast an impressive look, but it also offers significant stealth advantages. It provides a +30% Damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% Movement Speed increase when crouching, enhancing your ability to move undetected among enemies.
Does Ygwulf’s Fate Affect the Story in Avowed? SPOILER WARNING
Despite encountering Ygwulf early in the game, his fate subtly influences the ending of *Avowed*. After completing the final gameplay section, you'll be presented with art and narration that illustrate the impact of your decisions on the world of Eora within the Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to unify the Living Lands and foster peace, Ygwulf's death will always occur, fueling the radicalization of the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring they continue as a violent resistance against your efforts even after the credits roll.
