The PS Portal is designed as an extension of the PS5, featuring an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen integrated into a split-pad DualSense controller. It allows you to stream games from your PS5 at up to 60fps, replicating the DualSense's haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and touchscreen interface. While it's perfect for streaming within your home, it also supports streaming outside your home with a very stable and fast internet connection. Remember, the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it requires a PS5 to function.
Excitingly, Sony has expanded the capabilities of the PS Portal beyond just streaming from a PS5. Now, you can stream games directly from Sony's PlayStation Now cloud service, eliminating the need for a PS5. This update, which includes new quality of life beta updates launched in April, gives you access to over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. However, to enjoy this feature, you'll need to subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which costs $18 per month—a much more affordable option than purchasing a PS5 and individual games.
It's worth noting that while the PlayStation Portal is a convenient way to stream your PS5 games over Wi-Fi, it's not the only option. You can achieve similar functionality by using the PS Remote Play app on various mobile devices, including other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, setting this up can be more complicated, and you might miss out on some of the DualSense's unique features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy
"The PlayStation Portal is a surprising device that I've come to love despite initial skepticism. It offers a significantly better experience than using a phone with a slap-on controller and performs much better than I anticipated. I appreciate the freedom it provides to play my PS5 from anywhere with decent WiFi, especially when the TV is occupied by my family playing the Switch. However, it's not a standalone device and requires a PS5 to function. The lack of WiFi access that requires a web browser login and the absence of Bluetooth support for audio are notable drawbacks. Despite these, it's currently the best solution for PlayStation Remote Play, and if not for these issues, it would be a must-own for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or needs to compete for the household TV."
