In the world of television, the adage that nothing good can ever stay dead rings true once again. Amid a year that has seen the revival of iconic shows like The Office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the beloved 2000s hospital sitcom Scrubs is gearing up for a comeback. It has been 24 years since Zach Braff first stepped into the role of junior doctor JD at Sacred Heart Hospital, and now, he's set to reprise the character in ABC's upcoming Scrubs reboot. This new iteration is expected to blend a mix of new and returning cast members, breathing fresh life into the cherished series.
This concept isn't entirely new for Scrubs fans. ABC previously attempted a similar approach with the show's ninth season, which saw Braff and other series regulars passing the torch to a younger cast. Unfortunately, the move was met with lukewarm reception, resulting in the season being cut short after only nine episodes. However, almost two decades later, ABC is taking another shot at reviving the series, with original creator Bill Lawrence at the helm. Lawrence envisions the project as a unique blend of reboot and revival.
With Zach Braff's participation confirmed, Entertainment Weekly suggests that other beloved cast members are likely to follow suit. Bill Lawrence shared his vision for the reboot with Deadline, stating, "We've been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo. A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it's a calling."
Scrubs originally graced our screens with 182 episodes from 2001 to 2010. While there's no confirmed date yet for when filming will commence on the new episodes, anticipation is building among fans eager to see their favorite characters return to Sacred Heart Hospital.
