Splash Damage Cancels Transformers: Reactivate

Transformers: Reactivate Officially Cancelled by Splash Damage

After a prolonged and challenging development, Splash Damage has announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated title, Transformers: Reactivate. This news follows a cryptic trailer reveal at The Game Awards 2022, generating excitement but ultimately leading to disappointment for fans. The 1-4 player online game, featuring Autobots and Decepticons uniting against a new alien threat, was met with intrigue, given Splash Damage's experience with multiplayer titles like Gears 5 and Batman: Arkham Origins.

However, a lack of substantial updates and information, aside from leaks and early toy releases, fueled speculation. Leaks suggested a Generation 1 roster including Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, and Soundwave, with potential appearances by Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and even Beast Wars characters. These anticipated features now remain unrealized.

Splash Damage's official statement acknowledges the difficult decision to cancel Transformers: Reactivate, citing the need to refocus on other projects. Unfortunately, this decision may result in staff redundancies. The studio expressed gratitude to the development team and Hasbro for their contributions and support.

Fan reaction has been mixed, with some expressing disappointment, while others anticipated the cancellation due to the prolonged silence following the initial trailer.

The studio's shift in focus is now directed towards "Project Astrid," a AAA open-world survival game built using Unreal Engine 5, developed in collaboration with streamers Shroud and Sacriel. While "Project Astrid" represents a new direction, the cancellation of Transformers: Reactivate will unfortunately lead to job losses within Splash Damage. The wait for a high-quality, AAA Transformers game continues for fans.

Summary:

  • Transformers: Reactivate cancelled after a troubled development.
  • Potential layoffs at Splash Damage.
  • Studio now focusing on open-world survival game ("Project Astrid") using Unreal Engine 5.
