"Top Pokémon Card Gainers and Losers: May 9 Update"

Author : Aurora May 25,2025

Another week, another rollercoaster ride in the Pokémon single card market as trainers eagerly await the release of Destined Rivals. Fortunately, the Black Bolt and White Flare preorders at the Pokémon Center managed to dodge a bot takeover this time around.

The most significant price drop this week belongs to Greninja ex 214/167, which has plummeted by nearly 50% since the beginning of the year. We're also witnessing some appealing price reductions across the Obsidian Flames and 151 expansions. In contrast, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies is soaring, nearly doubling in value compared to early January, thanks to its stunning artwork that many believe was previously undervalued.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress, showcasing a dynamic battle against Venusaur and steadily climbing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art is truly taking off, gaining an extra $100 in value since the year started. Let's dive into the week's most notable Pokémon TCG risers and fallers.

Pokémon Card Crashes

While Sword and Shield era cards are experiencing a resurgence, Scarlet and Violet series cards are settling back to more reasonable prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from the 151 set is a stunning card, and its price is now 34% lower than it was at the beginning of March. It's a perfect addition to any collection, especially at its current price.

Bulbasaur was my first starter in Pokémon Blue, so Bulbasaur IR holds a special place in my heart. This card has seen a dramatic 52% drop since mid-March, making it an excellent time to add this beautiful card to your collection.

Moving on to Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR has always been a highlight of the set. Now is the perfect time to grab this card as its price has crashed by 40% since February, bringing it down to a very reasonable $18.17.

Despite any criticism of Obsidian Flames, Charizard ex SIR remains a standout with its striking stained glass Tera form design. Although it hasn't dropped significantly since March, a $5 saving is still a saving.

The biggest faller this month is Greninja ex SIR, which was once poised to be the priciest Scarlet and Violet era card. However, the arrival of Prismatic Evolutions shifted the market's attention. It's still a fantastic card holding strong at $275, but consider the price it fetched in late February at $411.62—a stark reminder of how quickly values can change.

Pokémon Card Climbers

Shifting to this week's climbers, Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art remains a coveted card from the Sword and Shield era. Already valued at over $500, it's now at $649.99 and showing no signs of slowing down. It could well reach the $1,000 mark in the coming years, so it's worth considering if you can afford it.

There's never enough love for Kanto in my book, and Charizard V Alt Art delivers with its depiction of a battle against Venusaur. The dynamic angle and sense of movement set it apart from many static Pokémon card designs. It's gained another $40 since January and could easily hit $200 before the year is out.

Dragonite V Alt Art from Evolving Skies is another standout. This fan-favorite Pokémon can look adorable or fierce, and its artwork captures its charm beautifully. It's nearly doubled in value since mid-January and now stands at a solid $225. Make sure to grab one before it climbs any higher. Don't miss last week's article—it featured some incredible cards too.

Pokémon Card Sealed Boosters

If you're committed to pulling chase cards yourself, here's what's currently in stock. Be cautious of prices above MSRP; we're in a unique position as Pokémon trainers right now, so avoid paying more than necessary.

Here's the Pokémon TCG full Release Schedule for this year, so you don't miss out on anything. Buying singles remains the most cost-effective way to collect, but remember, you don't need to "Catch 'Em All!"
