Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen an explosive surge in mod adoption following the release of Patch 7. The response has been phenomenal, with an astonishing number of mods downloaded in a remarkably short timeframe.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) to announce that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. "Modding is pretty big," he stated. This figure was later eclipsed by mod.io founder Scott Reismanis, who reported that installs surpassed three million and were still climbing rapidly.
Patch 7's success is largely attributed to several key additions: new evil endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and the highly anticipated official Larian Mod Manager. This integrated tool simplifies mod browsing, installation, and management directly within the game.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower creators to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can also incorporate custom scripts, perform basic debugging, and publish directly from the toolkit.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) that unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted editor features. While Larian has previously been selective about providing full development tool access ("We are a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke previously told PC Gamer), the community's ingenuity is evident.
Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding support, acknowledging the complexity of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will come first, followed by console support after addressing potential issues and navigating platform submission processes.
Beyond the modding boom, Patch 7 delivers a refined gaming experience with UI improvements, fresh animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance enhancements. Future updates from Larian are anticipated, potentially including further details on their cross-platform modding roadmap.
