How To Duel Enemies in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Dynasty Warriors: Origins' Duel System: A High-Stakes Showdown

While Dynasty Warriors: Origins is renowned for its massive battles against hordes of enemies, a compelling gameplay element making a comeback from previous installments is the duel system. Let's explore how it works.

Understanding Duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Introduced in Dynasty Warriors 4, duels return in Dynasty Warriors: Origins after more than two decades. While initially unavailable, the option to duel unlocks in Chapter 2. However, duels aren't open to all combatants; you can only challenge high-ranking enemy officers. A prompt appears briefly upon their arrival, allowing you to initiate a duel by simultaneously pressing R1 and L1.

The duel commences within a designated arena surrounded by soldiers. This one-on-one encounter differs from standard battles. A progress bar at the top of the screen tracks both your and your opponent's progress. Each successful hit advances your meter, while your opponent's hits fill theirs.

Victory requires filling your meter by inflicting sufficient damage on your opponent. Your starting health doesn't affect the duel; instead, your current morale dictates the initial meter level. A winning streak grants a larger starting advantage, while a losing one puts you at a disadvantage. Evenly matched opponents start with equal progress. Given the one-on-one nature, strategic play is crucial. Observe your opponent's attack patterns, utilizing dodges, parries, and distance to minimize damage and counter effectively, while mindful of the time limit. Avoid reckless aggression.

Consequences of Victory and Defeat

Winning a duel in Dynasty Warriors: Origins delivers substantial rewards: massive damage to your opponent and a significant morale boost. Conversely, defeat results in heavy damage and a substantial morale drop for your army, potentially jeopardizing the battle's outcome, especially in later stages. However, inconclusive duels (neither party wins) carry no penalties; the battle resumes normally. Only certain unavoidable duels carry mission-failing consequences for a loss; victory in these automatically secures a win. Therefore, while duels offer a significant tactical advantage, underestimating your opponent can lead to disastrous results.

This concludes our guide to duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
