Compulsion Games' writer and narrative designer, Zaire Lanier, unveiled captivating details about the action-adventure game, South of Midnight, in a recent Xbox Wire article. Mark your calendars for the game's release on April 8, 2025. Set in the mystical town of Prospero, the game transports players to a variety of Southern-inspired locales, from flooded countrysides and abysmal swamps to the majestic Appalachian mountains.
The story trailer kicks off with our protagonist, Hazel, and her mother preparing for a hurricane. A heated argument leads Hazel to storm out of their home, only to witness it being swept away by a devastating flood. Driven by the need to find her lost mother, Hazel embarks on a journey that reveals her true heritage, plunging her into a fantastical realm inhabited by creatures straight out of Southern folktales.
Lanier shared, "Hazel begins to see fantastical phenomena all over Prospero, including meeting Catfish, an enormous – and talking – creature stuck in a tree after the hurricane's wrath." Catfish reveals to Hazel that she is a Weaver, endowed with magical abilities to see and manipulate the threads that weave the tapestry of fate.
As Hazel masters her Weaving powers, she confronts the game's antagonists, the Haints—corrupted beings spreading decay. Her mission is to free these creatures from corruption, restoring harmony to the world.

Gameplay Involves Threads and Weaving
South of Midnight introduces a novel gameplay mechanic centered around threads and the mystical art of Weaving. As Hazel, players will harness these threads to unlock spells and abilities essential for battling different types of Haints.
During the Xbox Developer Direct 2025, game director Jasmin Roy explained the core combat mechanics. "Push, Pull, and Weave are some of the spells at your disposal, offering tactical advantages in fights. Timing is key—pull distant enemies to initiate melee combos, push them away to interrupt and stun their attacks, then capitalize with follow-up strikes."
Hazel's arsenal includes a spindle, weaving hooks, and a distaff, inspired by traditional textile crafting and spinning wheels. These tools grant players diverse movesets and abilities to combat and cleanse the Haints of their corruption.

One such creature featured in the Direct is Two-Toed Tom, a colossal albino alligator adorned with weapons and overgrown vegetation.
