Following significant player backlash, Spectre Divide developer Mountaintop Studios swiftly adjusted in-game skin and bundle pricing just hours after the online FPS title's launch. This article details the studio's response and the resulting player reaction.
Spectre Divide Addresses Pricing Concerns with Price Cuts and Refunds
Partial SP Refunds for Early Buyers
Mountaintop Studios announced a price reduction of 17-25% across in-game weapons and character skins, a move directly addressing player criticism over initially exorbitant costs. Game director Lee Horn confirmed the changes, implemented shortly after release.
The studio acknowledged player feedback, stating, "We've heard your concerns and are taking action. Weapon and outfit prices are permanently reduced by 17-25%. Players who purchased items prior to this adjustment will receive a 30% SP [in-game currency] refund." This refund is rounded up to the nearest 100 SP.
The price adjustments exclude Starter packs, Sponsorships, and Endorsement upgrades. Mountaintop Studios clarified that these packs "will remain unchanged. However, anyone who purchased the Founder's or Supporter pack and these additional items will receive the extra SP added to their account."
Player response to the price correction is mixed, mirroring the game's current "Mixed" Steam rating (49% negative at the time of writing). While some appreciate the developer's responsiveness, others remain critical. Negative reviews flooded Steam following the initial launch. One Twitter (X) user commented, "It's a start, but not quite enough. It's good they're listening to feedback." Another suggested allowing individual item purchases from bundles, believing this would increase revenue.
However, skepticism remains. One player criticized the timing of the price change, stating, "This should have been done beforehand, not as a reaction to player anger. If this trend continues, the game's long-term prospects seem doubtful, especially with increasing competition from other free-to-play titles."
