Squad Busters is celebrating its first anniversary with the launch of its monumental update 2.0 on May 13th. Since its debut in 2024, the game has struggled to capture the massive following its developers at Supercell hoped for. With update 2.0, the team aims to turn things around significantly.
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 represents a comprehensive reboot, transforming core elements from battle mechanics to victory conditions. The most notable shift is the introduction of Heroes. Players now select a Hero to lead their squad, and losing this Hero means defeat. Heroes are familiar characters from the Supercell universe, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay.
Combat mechanics have also been revamped. Players no longer need to halt to engage in combat; movement and attacks are now seamlessly integrated, leading to more dynamic, fast-paced, and intense battles. Victory conditions have evolved as well; instead of eliminating all opponents, players only need to defeat the enemy Hero. This change has sparked debate among the community, with some seeing it as a shift towards a Brawl Stars-inspired gameplay.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
In this major overhaul, several modes such as Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder are being removed. Additionally, certain old skins and progression systems will be phased out. Supercell plans to compensate players with Hero Points and other in-game items to ease the transition.

The urgency behind these changes is clear: Squad Busters has yet to reach the popularity of Supercell's other hits like Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars. As the game approaches its first anniversary on May 29th, Supercell is pulling out all the stops to reignite player interest. They've planned a series of daily piñata events to celebrate, which will also offer opportunities to unlock a new Hero, Mortis.
