Every genre of film has its share of disappointments, but the video game movie genre seems to have more than its fair share of flops. Classics like the 1993's Super Mario Bros. and 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation are infamous for their poor quality and their failure to capture the essence of the games they're based on. Fortunately, recent years have shown some improvement in Hollywood's approach, with successes like the Sonic the Hedgehog series and The Super Mario Bros. Movie demonstrating a more promising direction. However, not all recent attempts have been successful, as evidenced by the disappointing Borderlands adaptation.
