Nintendo Teases New 3D Mario for Switch 2: 'Stay Tuned'

Author : Allison May 04,2025

Nintendo is dropping tantalizing hints about a new 3D Mario game that could be just around the corner, but fans will have to wait a bit longer for the official reveal. During a recent CNN interview, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to eager fans clamoring for another major Mario title. While he didn't confirm a direct sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, his comments suggest that fans won't have to wait too long to see more from the beloved franchise.

"Stay tuned," Bowser teased. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."

While Bowser's words don't guarantee an imminent announcement, they offer hope to those disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario game in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo unveiled its hybrid console sequel earlier this month, it showcased exciting titles like Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, and more. However, a traditional 3D Mario platformer was conspicuously missing.

The last major flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, hit shelves in October 2017, shortly after the original Switch's launch. That means it's been nearly eight years since the last big Mario release. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza might help tide fans over, many were hoping for a Super Mario Odyssey 2 announcement. Yet, given Mario's iconic status within Nintendo's vast catalog, it would be surprising not to see a new 3D Mario game surface sooner rather than later.

As we await further updates on a new mainline Mario adventure, you can keep an eye on Nintendo’s updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of the console’s launch on June 5, 2025. In the meantime, catch up on everything revealed during last week’s Mario Kart World Direct and read our hands-on thoughts on Donkey Kong Bananza.
