Once Human sits pretty at 230,000 peak player count, but it\'s still a long way out from mobile

NetEase's post-apocalyptic survival game, Once Human, has achieved a remarkable 230,000 peak concurrent players on Steam since its PC debut. This impressive launch also secured it the seventh spot on Steam's top sellers and fifth on the most-played list. However, this initial surge might mask a potential player decline, a factor worth noting given the game's initial Steam wishlist count of under 300,000.

Scheduled for a mobile release in September, Once Human has already teased exciting updates. These include a PvP mode pitting the Mayflies and Rosetta factions against each other, and a new PvE area in a northern mountain region, introducing fresh challenges and enemies. The game's setting—a world ravaged by a catastrophic event leading to supernatural phenomena—has generated considerable hype.

Despite its seemingly successful PC launch, NetEase has surprisingly delayed the mobile release, still targeting September. Nevertheless, the game maintains its strong position on Steam's charts.

A Cause for Concern? The term "peak" player count is crucial. The average player count is likely lower, and a rapid drop-off from the peak so soon after launch could be a warning sign for NetEase. This is especially true considering the game's initial Steam wishlist numbers.

NetEase, known for its mobile game dominance, is clearly making a significant push into the PC market. While Once Human's visuals and gameplay are compelling, a swift shift in their core audience might prove challenging.

The mobile release of Once Human, whenever it arrives, will undoubtedly be a significant event. In the meantime, check out our list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far) and our list of the year's most anticipated mobile games to discover other captivating titles!
