Destiny 2 Update Causes Players' Usernames to be Wiped OutA recent Destiny 2 update unintentionally wiped out a significant number of players' usernames due to a malfunction in the game's moderation system. This article details the developers' response and outlines steps players can take.

Destiny 2 Username Glitch: Bungie Issues Name Change Tokens

Bungie, the developers of Destiny 2, recently acknowledged a widespread issue affecting player usernames (Bungie Names). Many players reported their names were unexpectedly replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This began around August 14th, stemming from a problem within Bungie's name moderation system.

The Destiny 2 team confirmed the issue on Twitter (X), stating they were investigating and planned to provide an update, including additional name change tokens for all players. The moderation system typically flags and changes usernames violating terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, many players affected had perfectly acceptable usernames, some dating back to 2015.

Bungie swiftly responded, identifying the root cause and implementing a server-side fix to prevent further occurrences. They reassured players that name change tokens would be distributed soon to allow affected players to reclaim their preferred names.

While Bungie continues to work on a complete resolution, players are advised to remain patient and await further updates regarding the distribution of name change tokens. Players experiencing this issue should expect future communication from Bungie regarding the token rollout.
