"Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski to Direct New Miami Vice Film"

Author : Natalie May 13,2025

Joseph Kosinski, acclaimed director of Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly set to helm a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The screenplay will be penned by Dan Gilroy, known for his work on Nightcrawler, based on an initial draft by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy has recently been involved in writing multiple episodes of the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor, which was created by his brother, Tony Gilroy.

Miami Vice, an iconic NBC police series created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, ran for five influential seasons from 1984 to 1989. The show starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as the stylish Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, and it is celebrated for its groundbreaking style and impact on television aesthetics. The series was previously adapted into a feature film in 2006 by Michael Mann, featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.

While further details about the new Miami Vice film are scarce at this stage, it's confirmed that this project won't be the next on Kosinski's slate following the release of his film F1 in June. This timeline should provide Kosinski with ample opportunity to prepare thoroughly, including choosing the perfect Ferrari for the film's aesthetic.
