Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt has announced that he is taking a sabbatical leave. Upon his return, he will begin working on Arrowhead's next game. In a tweet, Pilestedt revealed that he has dedicated 11 years to the Helldivers franchise, starting with the original game in 2013 and continuing with Helldivers 2 from early 2016.
"Eleven years of working around the clock on the same IP has made me set aside family, friends, and my lovely wife... and myself," Pilestedt stated. He plans to use his sabbatical to reconnect with those who supported him throughout his career. Pilestedt expressed confidence in Arrowhead's team to continue delivering exceptional content for Helldivers 2 during his absence.
Helldivers 2, launched in February 2024, became PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling game ever, selling 12 million copies within 12 weeks. The game's success has led Sony to adapt it into a movie. Pilestedt became a prominent figure for Helldivers 2, engaging with the community on social media, Reddit, and Discord. However, the game's massive popularity brought new challenges, including increased community toxicity and threats towards studio members.
Before Helldivers 2, Arrowhead had success with the first Helldivers and Magicka. The sequel's launch was marred by server issues, and subsequent updates faced criticism over weapon balance and the value of Premium Warbonds. The most significant controversy arose when Sony attempted to require PC players to link a PlayStation Network account, a decision that was eventually reversed following a review-bombing campaign on Steam. The backlash significantly impacted Arrowhead's community management efforts.
In response to Helldivers 2's success and challenges, Pilestedt transitioned from CEO to chief creative officer at Arrowhead, allowing him to focus more on game development and community engagement. Shams Jorjani, formerly of Paradox and a publisher of Magicka, succeeded Pilestedt as CEO.
While details about Arrowhead's next project remain undisclosed, it is expected to take some time before its release. Meanwhile, Arrowhead continues to support Helldivers 2, recently introducing a new enemy faction, the Illuminate, to keep the game fresh and engaging.
