Lollipop Chainsaw is making a bold return with a sequel and an anime spin-off, over a decade after the original cult classic launched in 2012. The upcoming game is being developed by Dragami Games, the spiritual successor to Kadokawa Games, which previously spearheaded the remaster project Lollipop Chainsaw RePop released last year for PC and consoles.
The original game carved out a dedicated fanbase with its over-the-top, cheerleader-led zombie-slicing action, directed by the legendary Suda51 of No More Heroes fame and partially written by James Gunn—yes, the same James Gunn who would later helm Guardians of the Galaxy and lead the DC Universe. While the remaster received mixed reactions—primarily due to the absence of the original’s licensed soundtrack and a delayed release after Dragami pivoted from a full remake to a remaster—fan enthusiasm for the franchise has remained strong.
According to the latest announcement, the Lollipop Chainsaw series has sold 1.5 million units to date, with at least 1.24 million attributed to the original release.
Now, Dragami Games and Nada Holdings are teaming up once again to develop a full-fledged sequel. Development is already underway, with the goal of preserving the original’s unique charm while expanding on its world and gameplay. The project will reunite key staff members from the original title, ensuring continuity in vision and style—though, as expected, there’s no confirmation of involvement from Suda51 or James Gunn.
The official statement emphasizes a deep respect for the source material:
“Under the strong partnership between Nada Holdings and Dragami Games, development is already underway on a brand-new Lollipop Chainsaw title that both preserves and builds upon the appeal of the original. With a firm commitment to honoring the spirit of the original work, the development team includes key staff members who were involved in the previous title. The new project is also being developed with close attention to fan feedback.”
Notably, the announcement addresses creative direction head-on, affirming that the sequel will maintain the original’s provocative tone. It explicitly states that the development process will not impose “excessive creative restrictions in the name of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion),” ensuring the new game retains the edgy, darkly humorous style fans remember—complete with the franchise’s signature aesthetic.
“As with the original, the new title aims to recreate a world rich in dark humor,” the release concludes. “The development process will prioritize staying true to the distinctive tone and spirit of the original work.”
No release window has been announced for Lollipop Chainsaw 2, but with development in motion and a passionate team at the helm, anticipation is building fast.
