Warner Bros. Games has unveiled Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, touted as the most comprehensive version of the intense fighting game. However, the release has raised alarms among fans, who fear NetherRealm has shifted focus away from the title, potentially halting new DLC characters or major updates.
Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition bundles the core game with prior downloadable content, including the Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack 1, and Kombat Pack 2.
It also introduces new character skins for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Khan, drawing inspiration from the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film, a Mortal Kombat (2021) movie skin for Sub-Zero, and a tournament-themed outfit for Liu Kang.
For fans, the Definitive Edition signals a possible end to Mortal Kombat 1’s run. While Warner Bros. and NetherRealm are known for such editions, this release carries a sense of closure. With no news on a Kombat Pack 3 or other significant updates, many believe the T-1000 guest character, set for March 2025, may mark the game’s final addition.
If accurate, this is a major letdown for dedicated Mortal Kombat 1 fans who expected prolonged support. Many point to a September 2024 tweet from NetherRealm’s Ed Boon, who reassured fans that the studio remained “fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time.”
“It feels like they’re wrapping things up, saying, ‘See you in a year or two for another pricey game stuffed with guest characters!’” vented one frustrated redditor.
“Mortal Kombat 1’s content lifespan is shorter than the Texas Chainsaw Massacre game, what a joke,” another remarked.

For context, in July 2021, NetherRealm announced it had begun its next project (Mortal Kombat 1), ending DLC support for Mortal Kombat 11 after two years and three months. No similar statement has been made for Mortal Kombat 1.
The game saw a brief revival in January with the secret Floyd fight, a pink ninja teased by Ed Boon for years, sparking a community-driven surge. Yet, this was a rare highlight in an otherwise underwhelming release for many loyal fans.
The T-1000 Terminator, part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, joined Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian as the final DLC character. Speculation persists about a potential Kombat Pack 3, amid doubts about Mortal Kombat 1’s commercial success.
Warner Bros. Discovery, however, remains confident in the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav emphasized that the company will focus on just four key titles, including Mortal Kombat.

Fans anticipate NetherRealm’s next move might be a third Injustice game, though neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The first Injustice: Gods Among Us launched in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. After Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, many expected an Injustice sequel, but Mortal Kombat 1, a soft reboot, arrived in 2023 instead.
In a June 2023 IGN interview, Ed Boon vaguely addressed this shift. “Several factors played a role, some I can discuss, others I shouldn’t,” he noted.
Boon cited the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to Unreal Engine 4 (from Mortal Kombat 11’s Unreal Engine 3) as key reasons. “We prioritized safety during COVID and transitioned to a new engine,” he explained. “Ultimately, we decided on another Mortal Kombat, with hopes to return to Injustice.”
When pressed, Boon confirmed the Injustice franchise remains alive. “Not at all closed off,” he said.
Mortal Kombat 1 has sold 5 million copies, with the franchise reaching 100 million units overall. Mortal Kombat 11, the series’ best-seller, surpassed Mortal Kombat X’s nearly 11 million units, hitting 15 million by 2022. By comparison, Mortal Kombat 1 has lagged behind its predecessors.
