New Director Set for Live-Action Street Fighter Film

Author : Connor May 04,2025

A new Street Fighter movie has found its director in Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the surreal comedy series, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai is set to helm this latest adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, with Capcom deeply involved in the project. Fans can mark their calendars for the film's release on March 20, 2026.

This new movie marks another attempt to bring the iconic fighting game franchise to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. While it received mixed reviews from critics at the time, it remains a beloved cult classic.

Details on casting have yet to be announced, but fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life once again. Initially, directors Danny and Michael Philippou of Talk to Me fame were attached to the project but departed last summer. Sakurai's involvement hints at a potentially more comedic and absurdist take on the Street Fighter universe, which could be a thrilling direction for fans who enjoy the game's more whimsical elements.

While awaiting the film, gamers can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which has recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more on the game, you can check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review.
