New Patent Confirms Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features

Author : Lily May 07,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz with its familiar design, but it's the innovative changes to the Joy-Cons that are capturing attention, as revealed through recent patents. Although Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these details, reports suggest that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will feature magnetic attachments and can function similarly to a computer mouse.

A series of patents filed by Nintendo provide insight into these enhancements. According to the patent, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." This indicates that the Joy-Cons will attach to the Switch 2 magnetically, offering a seamless connection and detachment process.

The patent further explains that two buttons are required to detach the Joy-Cons from the Switch 2 body. It states, "The first button and the second button are provided in the longitudinal direction in the top surface of the protrusion. The first button and the second button are to be pressed by a user. The first button is attracted to the first magnet by a magnetic force. The second button is attracted to the second magnet by a magnetic force." This dual-button mechanism ensures a secure attachment while allowing easy removal.

Intriguingly, the patents also showcase the Joy-Cons' ability to operate as a mouse. Illustrations depict players using the Joy-Cons railside down, with the shoulder buttons functioning as mouse buttons. Specifically, the R1 and R2 buttons act as the left and right mouse buttons, respectively. There's also a suggestion of a scrolling function using the joysticks, adding versatility to the Joy-Cons' functionality.

Further images illustrate various configurations, including using the Joy-Cons as a dual mouse setup or pairing one as a mouse with the other as a traditional game controller. This flexibility could open up new gaming possibilities.

The magnetic attachment feature of the Joy-Cons was among the earliest leaks about the Switch 2, while the mouse-like functionality emerged later. Although not officially confirmed, a teaser released in January hinted at this feature by showing the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface like a computer mouse.
