Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 VRR Exclusive to Handheld Mode

Author : Joshua May 27,2025

Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing with excitement over mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages. However, those references were quickly removed, leading to widespread confusion. Now, Nintendo has stepped in to clarify the situation regarding VRR functionality on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a statement provided to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect. The company stated, "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When pressed about potential VRR support for docked mode in a future update, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."

This means that, at present, users of the Nintendo Switch 2 will benefit from VRR only when playing in handheld mode. Those connecting their console to a TV will not have access to this feature at launch. The clarification follows a period of confusion after the initial VRR mention was spotted and then removed. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented the gradual disappearance of these mentions across various websites.

While this news may be disappointing for those eager to use VRR with their Switch 2 on a TV, there's still room for optimism. Sony, for instance, introduced VRR support to the PS5 via a post-launch update, suggesting a similar possibility for the Switch 2 in the future.

In other Nintendo Switch 2 developments, the company recently announced a list of games set to receive free performance upgrades on the new console. Titles such as Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury are included in this update. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, assured fans that there will be sufficient Switch 2 units available to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
