Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels
Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures, sparking discussions about future installments. In a February 22, 2025 Bloomberg interview, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel hinted at the possibility of expansions or even a sequel.
While Obsidian remains tight-lipped on concrete plans, Patel expressed a strong desire to continue working within the established world. She highlighted the team's strengthened expertise and familiarity with the game's lore and mechanics, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Avowed's Development Journey: A Story of Overcoming Challenges
Patel candidly discussed the complexities of Avowed's development, acknowledging a challenging and iterative process. The project, initiated in 2018, faced significant hurdles, including Obsidian's initial preparations for a potential sale, followed by its acquisition by Microsoft in 2020. This transition led to the removal of certain features, notably the multiplayer component. A leadership change and subsequent game reboot in January 2021 further shaped the project's trajectory.
Managing a team of over 80 developers presented unique challenges, as Patel noted, "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction...you would do that with a very small team." Under Patel's guidance, the team refocused on strengthening the narrative and lore, drawing heavily from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, and shifted from a fully open world to a series of interconnected open zones. Patel reflected on the overall experience, emphasizing, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on...things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?
Riding the wave of Avowed's success, Obsidian has expressed interest in developing a tactics game within the Pillars of Eternity universe. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer confirmed this interest, stating, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like...there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he also acknowledged the need to carefully consider the project's scope, including team size, visual fidelity, and overall scale.
Sawyer also reiterated his commitment to developing Pillars of Eternity 3, but emphasized the need for a significantly larger budget, akin to Baldur's Gate 3's reported $100 million investment, a substantial increase from the budget allocated to Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
