Diablo 4 has introduced Season 8 alongside a series of free updates that will gradually build toward the action RPG's second expansion, scheduled for 2026.
However, the game's passionate core community has voiced dissatisfaction. These dedicated players - who regularly engage with the nearly two-year-old title, analyze meta builds, and push for deeper mechanics - have made their concerns clear to Blizzard. While Diablo 4 boasts many casual players who enjoy simple monster-slaying, its most vocal advocates seek substantial new features and gameplay innovations.
Roadmap Controversy Emerges
Blizzard's first-ever Diablo 4 roadmap for 2025 faced immediate criticism upon release. Players expressed doubts about Season 8's offerings and questioned whether the planned content would maintain long-term engagement.
The discussion grew so heated that a Diablo community manager intervened on the Diablo 4 subreddit. "We kept later roadmap details brief to allow for ongoing development work," they explained. "This doesn't represent everything coming in 2025 :)" Even former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra joined the conversation.
Season 8 Launches With Changes
The new season arrives amid these discussions, bringing several controversial adjustments. Most notably, Diablo 4's battle pass now resembles Call of Duty's non-linear progression system, but provides less in-game currency - reducing players' ability to fund future passes.
In an exclusive IGN interview, Diablo 4 lead live game designer Colin Finer and seasons designer Deric Nunez addressed roadmap feedback, confirmed plans to revamp the skill tree (a longstanding player request), and explained the battle pass modifications.
