Monster Hunter Wilds: A Deep Dive into the Starting Equipment
Many Monster Hunter players cite crafting equipment from hunted monsters as a key source of excitement. The satisfaction of a complete armor set and matching weapon, earned through repeated hunts, is a familiar feeling. This core gameplay loop, crafting equipment from monster remains to harness their power, has been a staple since the series' inception. Players use their skill to defeat powerful beasts, then incorporate those beasts' abilities into their own arsenal to become even stronger.
In an IGN interview, Kaname Fujioka, Executive Director and Art Director of Monster Hunter Wilds, discussed the game's equipment design philosophy. While the design range has expanded, the team initially focused on the visual connection between monster and equipment. "If you're wearing Rathalos' equipment, you'll look like Rathalos," Fujioka explained. Wilds introduces new monsters, each offering unique and visually striking equipment. Rompopolo, a mad scientist-themed monster, for instance, has head armor resembling a plague doctor's mask (see the hunt video below).
However, the developers emphasize the significance of the starting equipment. Fujioka designed all 14 starting weapon types from scratch—a first for the series. Unlike previous games, where starting equipment was deliberately basic, Wilds' protagonist, a chosen hunter, deserved more impressive initial gear. "I wanted to make it feel like you're a bit of a star, even when you're only carrying starting equipment," Fujioka stated.
Director Yuya Tokuda highlighted the unique design of the weapons in Wilds. Unlike Monster Hunter: World, where weapon designs were primarily based on monster materials, Wilds features unique designs for each weapon. The starting armor, the "Hope" series, also reflects this level of detail, complementing the narrative of an experienced hunter investigating the Forbidden Lands.
The Hope set, with its deep emerald green base, forms a hooded long coat when fully equipped. Fujioka explained the complexity of creating this set, ensuring each piece worked independently and cohesively as a whole. "We've actually given more attention to the Hope series than any other equipment in this game," he stated, emphasizing the challenge of creating a flowing coat from separate armor pieces. While players will discover numerous equipment options throughout the game, the Hope set's elegant design ensures it remains a stylish and functional choice.
Starting the game with such meticulously crafted equipment is a significant departure. The 14 starting weapons and the Hope armor set are designed to immediately establish the player character as a skilled hunter. The level of detail promises a visually impressive and engaging experience from the very beginning.
